One of the most important factors for the success of people with autism is to have a school experience that is tailored to their needs.

If you’re a caregiver, you may be able to advocate with the teacher and get accommodations for your child. These accommodations can include:

  • Giving more time on tests
  • Providing extra time in class
  • Lowering classroom noise levels
  • Providing less distractions in class
  • Providers specialized instruction (like music therapy)

Parents/caregivers can also help their children by being involved in the school process.

A Little more Engagement

Parents/caregivers should go to all parent-teacher conferences, volunteer at school events, and get involved in the school community.

These actions will show that parents care about their child’s education and want them to succeed.

Supporting the Individual’s Social Life

One of the most important things you can do to help your loved ones with autism is supporting their social life. This means making sure they have social opportunities and friends. It also means teaching them how to talk and behave appropriately in public.

If a person has autism, it does not mean that they are incapable of developing friendships. However, people with autism may have difficulty understanding what is appropriate or inappropriate in a social setting. They may need more instruction than the average person on how to interact or “play well” with others. Parents don’t need to feel bad if they are struggling with this process because there are many resources out there.
