Kids with autism have a different way of communicating, so it’s important that you be patient when trying to get them to speak. Kids with a special condition will often use echolalia – repeating what someone else said in the very same words they heard.

See where they’re coming from

This is a form of communication they are comfortable with and is their way of answering your question or giving you information.

They don’t want to be perceived as rude or disrespectful, so if you see them repeating something, don’t get upset with them.

It’s also important not to ever yell at or hit the child- this could make them more agitated and cause them to lash out even more than they would without any treatment.

Learn a Few of their Favorite

If you’re trying to interact with kids who have autism, one of the best ways to start a conversation is by learning a few of their favorite things and using those as a starting point for conversation. For example, if they love animals, show them pictures of different types of animals you find on the internet.

This will make them feel more comfortable talking with you and can lead to other topics of conversation.
